With dozens of citizenship test apps and websites available, it can be hard to know which ones are worth your time. Some are excellent, some are outdated, and some contain incorrect information. Here's my assessment of the best resources available in 2025.
Top Pick
Start with the official Department of Home Affairs practice test (free, accurate, always up to date). Supplement with our free Australian practice test for additional questions. Use apps for on-the-go study, but always verify information against the official Our Common Bond booklet.
Official Government Resources (Free)
Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond
The official study resource. Everything on the test comes from this booklet. Available as a free download from the Department of Home Affairs website in multiple formats (PDF, audio, video). This is your primary study resourceβeverything else is supplementary.
Official Practice Test
The Department of Home Affairs offers a free practice test on their website. It uses the same format as the real test (20 multiple-choice questions, including values questions). Take this test multiple times before your actual test date.
Free Online Resources
CitizenshipTestPro (This Site)
Our free Australian citizenship practice test includes questions based on Our Common Bond, with instant scoring and answer explanations. We also have a comprehensive Australian citizenship test guide and country-specific study materials.
YouTube
Search for "Australian citizenship test practice" to find video study guides and question walkthroughs. Useful for audio learners or as a supplement to reading. Be cautious of older videos that may contain outdated information (especially regarding the Head of State).
Mobile Apps
Several apps are available for iOS and Android. When evaluating them, check:
- Last updated date: Apps updated in 2024 or 2025 are more likely to have current information
- Source material: Does it reference Our Common Bond?
- Reviews: Check recent reviews, not just the overall rating
- Values questions: Does the app include the mandatory values section?
What to Look for in a Good App
- Questions based on the current edition of Our Common Bond
- Includes the mandatory values section
- Provides explanations for correct answers
- Tracks your progress and identifies weak areas
- Recently updated (2024 or later)
Paid Resources
You generally don't need to pay for citizenship test preparation. The official study guide is free, and there are plenty of free practice tests available online. However, if you prefer structured courses, some options include:
- Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP): Free English language classes for eligible migrants. Some AMEP centres include citizenship test preparation.
- Settlement services: Many settlement agencies (funded by the Australian government) offer free citizenship preparation classes.
- Public libraries: Some libraries offer citizenship preparation sessions and have study materials available for borrowing.
Study Plan Using These Resources
- Week 1: Read Our Common Bond twice (available free online)
- Week 2: Take the official practice test + our practice test. Identify weak areas.
- Week 3 (if needed): Review weak areas using the booklet. Retake practice tests until scoring 90%+.
The key is using official, verified resources as your foundation. Apps and websites are great supplements, but they should never replace the official study material.
